6 Steps to Reliable Conversion Tracking with Google Tag Manager

Google Tag Manager (GTM) lets you deploy and govern that data layer without constant code releases—but only if tags are planned, permissioned, and tested correctly. Before getting to our 6 steps listed below, it’s important to note that to turn user action into a conversion, you need to configure 3 components within your GTM container:

  1. Variables: These are placeholders for the data you want to capture. For example, if you want to track a button click, ensure “Click ID” and “Click Text” are enabled in the Built-In Variables section.
  2. Triggers: This is the logic that tells GTM when to fire a tag. Instead of tracking every click, you might create a “Form Submissio” trigger that only fires when a user successfully reaches a “/thank_you” page or interacts with a CSS selector.
  3. Tags: This is the “What” you link you trigger to a specific tag type, like a GA4 event tag. Here you will name the event and map the variables so they show up correctly in your analytics reports.

1. Architect a Clear Data Layer

  • Define a single source of truth for page-level variables (e.g., page_type, product_id, user_status). Expose them in window.dataLayer before GTM loads.
  • Push interaction events (add_to_cart, form_start, video_progress, purchase) with contextual parameters like value, currency and transaction_id.
